Defensible Space Construction & Landscaping

A crucial fire mitigation strategy that helps protect homes from wildfires by reducing fuel sources around structures. California’s guidelines, particularly under Cal Fire’s Defensible Space Zones (Public Resources Code 4291), divide property into two key zones:

Zone 1: Immediate Zone (0-5 feet from the home)

Goal: Create a fire-resistant barrier to prevent flames from reaching structures.
✅ Remove all dead vegetation, leaves, and debris.
✅ Use non-combustible materials like gravel, stone, or concrete.
✅ Space plants apart and choose fire-resistant species (e.g., succulents, hardwoods).
✅ Trim tree branches at least 10 feet from chimneys and structures.

Zone 2: Intermediate Zone (5-100 feet from the home)

🔥 Goal: Slow fire spread and reduce intensity.
✅ Maintain proper tree spacing (10 feet between canopies).
✅ Remove ladder fuels—vegetation that allows fire to climb from ground to treetops.
✅ Keep grass under 4 inches tall and clear fallen leaves/branches.

Debris Removal Post Fire Damage

To those affected by the wildfire, we offer our deepest sympathy and hope to provide a way to keep pushing forward during such a difficult time. The way forward is to rebuild and think towards the future. Grenier Construction hope's to aid those affected by offering trustworthy and experienced help.

The EPA does not remove all debris from a burned home

They primarily handle the removal of hazardous materials in Phase 1 of the cleanup process. The full debris removal, including ash, structural remains, and non-hazardous materials, can be serviced from Grenier Construction, in in Phase 2 by state and local agencies, such as Grenier Construction.

Cleanup Process After a Wildfire

Phase 1 – Hazardous Waste Removal (EPA & State Agencies)

  • The EPA and state environmental agencies assess and remove toxic materials (e.g., asbestos, propane tanks, batteries, pesticides, paints, and Freon-containing appliances).
  • This step ensures that hazardous substances do not contaminate soil, air, or water.
  • The Site is then awarded a certificate for Phase 2

Phase 2 – Full Debris Removal

  • After Phase 1, property owners can opt into government-led debris removal programs (e.g., CalRecycle in California) or hire licensed private contractors for cleanup.
  • This includes the removal of all structural debris, ash, concrete foundations, and non-toxic remnants of the home.

Who Removes the Entire Home's Debris?

  • If homeowners enroll in a state or county debris removal program, the government oversees the full cleanup.
  • If homeowners opt out, they can hire private contractors who follow strict disposal regulations.
